The hyperscalers have the money. They're sitting on $500B in cash and generating $300B in free cash flow annually. They can write the checks. What they can't do is flip a switch and add 5 GW of grid capacity in Virginia or Texas.
AI Doesn't Run on Hope—It Runs on Electrons
A single large-scale AI training cluster can draw 100+ MW continuously. That's the equivalent of powering 80,000 homes, running 24/7, with zero downtime tolerance. And the big players aren't building one cluster—they're building dozens.
Global data center power demand currently stands at approximately 55 GW. But the demand surge is staggering: 84 GW by 2027—a 50% increase in three years. Scale that to individual training runs: by 2028, a single AI training run will require 1 GW of continuous power. This shows the desperation—data center developers are racing to lock in power before the queues get even longer.
And this is just one utility. Scale that behavior across Texas, Arizona, North Carolina, and other growth regions, and you see the systemic pressure: demand for AI data center power is outpacing the grid's ability to deliver it.
Siting Becomes Strategic—Power Determines Winners
Proximity to power isn't a nice-to-have anymore—it's the determining factor. Why is Oracle building 1.2 GW in Abilene, Texas? Why are hyperscalers buying land near nuclear plants and hydroelectric dams? Because the compute will go where the power is, not the other way around.
Oracle committed $40 billion for their Abilene facility, securing approximately 400,000 Nvidia GB200 superchips with $15 billion in funding locked in through JPMorgan ($9.6B loans) and equity investors. The Stargate program plans 7 GW capacity across multiple sites with over $400 billion in investment over three years, targeting 10 GW and $500 billion by end of 2025. These aren't accidents of geography. They're driven by one variable: available megawatts.
This Is a 10-Year Infrastructure Problem
You can't AI your way out of transmission bottlenecks. You can't software-optimize substation capacity. This requires physical capital, long permitting cycles, and political will. Natural gas plants, nuclear restarts, and renewable build-outs all take years to energize. The Department of Energy's data confirms: interconnection queue wait times expanded from <2 years (2000-2007) to median 5 years in 2023. And that median is rising.
Every year that passes, the backlog grows. Every quarter that new AI data centers come online, the queue gets longer. The permitting system was designed for a world where utilities added capacity in 5% increments. We're asking them to add it in 50% increments.

Geography Becomes Destiny
- Traditional hubs (Northern Virginia, Silicon Valley, Phoenix): Maxed out on power. New projects face multi-year delays. Premium pricing for existing capacity.
- Emerging hubs (Texas, Oklahoma, parts of the Midwest): Abundant power, available land, business-friendly permitting. Oracle's move isn't sentimental.
- International expansion (Middle East, Nordics, Canada): Sovereign AI ambitions plus cheap energy. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Iceland—anywhere with power surplus and political will to fast-track permitting.

The next industrial winners won't be determined by who has the best AI models or the most capital. They'll be determined by who secured gigawatts when everyone else was still arguing about algorithms. The constraint isn't capital. It's not even technology.
